How This Guy Generated $211,247 from Podcasting Last Month

That was not a typo in the title of this post.

Yes, it did read $211,247 last MONTH… (see the income report here). To be fair, not 100% of the revenue was directly from the podcast (like coaching, affiliate income, etc.) but the overall revenue was basically a result of his amazingly popular podcast.

Who is it? John Lee Dumas from EntrepreneurOnFire (

EntrepreneurOnFire is a business podcast that interviews today’s most inspiring and successful Entrepreneurs 7-days a week. EntrepreneurOnFire is a top 10 business podcast generating over 150,000 unique downloads a month in over 140 countries, and his lineup includes Barbara Corcoran, Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss, Gary Vaynerchuk, Guy Kawasaki, and hundreds more.

But here’s the kicker…

John didn’t even launch EntrepreneurOnFire until September of 2012. That’s not even a full 2 years ago. In the first 365 days from it launching, EOFire did $84,623.11 in revenue but by September 2013 (just a year after launching), John was generating over $51,000 PER MONTH and has continued to grow and eclipse that monthly (as you can now see from the $211,247 month he had last month).

I don’t know about you but that’s some serious revenue and John has his podcast to thank.

10 Ways to Get More Email Subscribers and Build a Powerful List

Hands down, one of the best things you can do to grow your platform, business, or organization is to put a heavy emphasis on building your email list.

It doesn’t matter if you are an author, professional speaker, entrepreneur, traditional business, church or nonprofit… building your list is a must. Well, it’s a must IF you want to amplify your impact exponentially.

“But Daniel, isn’t email kind of old school? I mean, we’re on social media now. Tweet tweet.”

Now that we’ve covered the benefits…

Here are a few ways to get more email subscribers and build a powerful list. I’ll start with a few of the common ways and then share a few unique ways that perhaps you haven’t considered.

Note: It doesn’t really matter which email service provider you use. Mailchimp, Aweber, and Constant Contact are great for most people. For those with more robust needs, check out Infusionsoft.

1. Add Email Signup to Your Website Above the Fold – I highly recommend having an email signup box on the top of your site (header) or in the sidebar above the fold. What does “above the fold” mean? It means that the email optin box is visible on the screen without scrolling down when someone lands on your site. You can also add a popup overlay of some kind. Some people have mixed feelings about them but the stats don’t lie, they work extremely well. I suggest Optin Monster for that.

2. If You Blog, Add a Signup Box to the Bottom of Every Post – In addition to a header or sidebar optin box, if you are a blogger you should also have a sign up box at the bottom of EVERY blog post. You can have this coded into your theme by a designer fairly inexpensively or insert signup box code into your WordPress blog using a simple plugin like ADD TO POST . You can also use services such as OptinSkin which has pre-designed options that are easy added to your posts. What Jeff Walker Didn’t Tell You About How His Book Became a Bestseller

There’s a little, well maybe bigger than little, insider secret to landing a book on the bestsellers list. It’s something Jeff Walker utilized but that I don’t think he’s told you yet. I’ll explain below…

Some of you know who Jeff Walker is. Some might not.

Jeff is a marketing guru and creator of the Product Launch Formula. Forbes magazine called him the 400 million dollar man. He has literally transformed the way stuff is sold online. Along the way he’s become one of the top entrepreneurial and marketing trainers in the world.

Jeff recently released his very first traditionally published, physical book:

Launch: An Internet Millionaire’s Secret Formula To Sell Almost Anything Online, Build A Business You Love, And Live The Life Of Your Dreams

It debuted as a #1 New York Times bestseller and has stayed on the list (at the time of this post) for at least a 2nd week (at #2).

There’s been a lot of hoopla around Jeff’s book release with a lot of influencers talking about it… such as Michael Hyatt, Amy Porterfield, Entrepreneur on Fire (John Lee Dumas), etc.

Inevitably when someone with a larger platform, like Jeff, releases a book as a bestseller, there are some followers who say “Yeah, that’s great but I could never release my book as a bestseller like him… I mean he has a huge platform, connections and resources.” Basically, in not so many words, making statements like that is the equivalent to giving up or making excuses for their own success (or lack thereof). Jeff gave a great response to that very remark here (Seriously, go watch it. It’s only 6 minutes but holds a powerful truth).

What Jeff Hasn’t Shared…

There is something though that I don’t think Jeff has shared with people yet about his book making it on the New York Times bestseller list. It’s the little secret of HOW.

Now, let me clarify something first. I don’t work with Jeff nor do I know him personally. I respect him, I follow his advice and I find the knowledge he offers to be quite valuable. Regardless of whether you are launching a product or idea, online or off, Jeff’s insight and principles found in his teachings (and new book) are very applicable and useful.

What I do know is that I have been in the author platform building and book marketing business for over 13 years. I’ve worked with some amazing authors, helped create many powerful brands and have helped launch dozens of bestsellers including books for Jon Gordon, Michael Hyatt, Crystal Paine, Ryan Blair, Allison Pataki and more.

So what I am about to tell you about Jeff’s launch (and, in part, how he made the list) isn’t

Why Most Authors Should Not Have Social Media Accounts for Their Books

I see it on Twitter and Facebook almost daily…
…and it makes me sad.

It’s when authors, with good intentions, setup social media accounts for their books. Specifically I mean setting up a separate Facebook page or Twitter account just for their book.

I know, it might “seem” like a good idea at first but… trust me, it’s not. There are several reasons why but the two most important reasons are this:

1. It fragments your traffic.
2. You likely won’t sustain it.

Let me explain…

As you build your platform you want to build it around people following you or your brand, not a product or a book (FYI: A book is a form of a product). Why? Because even though you might have one book now and it may be your primary focus… what happens when you eventually have two books, three books, four or more? You have to think long-term and be strategic. Not only that, you want to try and keep your platform consolidated as best you can so that you can concentrate your effectiveness and leverage it for the best result over time. Think about a laser, it’s concentration is what makes it so powerful. It’s far better to have 1000 people following one account (your primary) than to split it up and have some here, some there, etc. When you splinter it off, inevitably what happens is that you can’t keep up with it all. Yeah, you might be able to at first when the excitement is there but give it a month or two and I’d be willing to bet money that you will find yourself neglecting the secondary accounts if not ignoring them all together. It’s just what happens and when it does, you have that splintered traffic (followers) that are basically then wasted.

Think about other authors that you follow or look up to. Do you ultimately follow their book / product or do you follow them as writers?

I don’t follow Trust Agents, although it’s a great book, I follow Chris Brogan. Same for Jeff Goins, Jon Gordon, Michael Hyatt, Mark Batterson, Tony Robbins, John Maxwell or any other author out there. When I love their books, I love their impact and thus I follow them and look forward to the next thing they will write.

The same will be true for those who look up to you.

Keep it simple. Keep it concentrated and you’ll achieve far better results in the long run.

*There are a few special situations where this does not apply but for most authors, it does.

Mailchimp: Super easy to use and free for the first 2000 subscribers. Ideal for writers and artists who just want to share their art.

Aweber: Similar to Mailchimp. Easy to use.

Podcast Answer Man: Check out the resources by Cliff Ravenscraft. He’s one of the go-to guys for podcasting expertise.

Blue Nessie Mic: If you aren’t ready to go super-pro yet, I suggest starting with the Blue Nessie microphone. It’s what I use and I love it. Simple and easy to use + low cost.



Dropbox – The quickest, easiest and most reliable way to share documents (written, photos, audio and video files) with your virtual assistants and co-online buddies and partners. I seriously use this thing almost hourly during my work day!

Evernote – Great note collector that can help you become super productive. Available on the web, iPad, iPhone and everywhere else where you need to make a note, clip something to read later and then move on. I love this thing. Read how Michael Hyatt uses Evernote to stay super productive.
