Perspective

Cherish Today

As I sat at my desk this morning thinking about 2010 and 2011, I glanced up at a small frame on my wall. That frame contains a beautiful picture of a pathway leading through a lush forest. Underneath that image, there is large text that reads:

CHERISH TODAY
Yesterday Is But A Dream.

Tomorrow, A Vision Of Hope.
Look To This Day For It Is Life.

As I read this, I couldn’t help but stop and say a few simple “Thank You’s” to God for the gift of each passing day. For the ability to celebrate in each days accomplishments and learn from their disappointments. But even greater, to experience the joy of being alive and be reminded that TODAY is life.

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. TODAY is the day that we are fully present, here and now.

It’s easy to get caught up worrying about the past. Focusing on things that have hurt us or gone wrong in our lives… things that we can let create a wall that blocks us from experiencing the joys of TODAY.

On the contrary, it’s also easy to spend too much time planning for the future… trying to achieve or accomplish rather than embracing the simplicity of enjoying the life that is abundantly surrounding us… right here, right now… in this very moment.

Now I am not saying that planning for the future or reflecting on the past is bad but when I read this message it reminded me that balance is important. We must discover how to not only learn from the past and plan for the future but also Cherish Today, for today is the day that we are given the gift of life.

So this week, be encouraged to…

Stop living in the past.
Stop living in the future.

Live Today.

Call that friend or family member who you’ve been thinking about. Stop and play with your kids. Take a break from your computer and walk outside and just sit and soak up the beauty of the world that surrounds you. Tell your spouse you love them.

You might even try taking out a sheet of paper and writing down 10 things you are thankful for today. Post that note somewhere you can see it so that when you have one of those “not so great days” you’ll have a visible reminder of just how insignificant that “not so great day” really is.

How will you Cherish Today?

I'm spending today reflecting on this past year and planning ahead for the new year to come. It's my time of the year to take inventory, refocus and retool before the busy new year starts. Thanks for the reminder.
